ABOUT

THE ROBERT E. SHEPARD AGENCY

The best books must be sought out and crafted. Though no longer accepting new submissions, The Robert E. Shepard Agency’s distinguished list, described here for informational purposes, includes authors who are expert in their fields and in the use of prose, and works that set new standards in their fields, benefitting, informing, and entertaining their readers.

Robert Shepard founded the agency in 1994, moving it from the San Francisco Bay Area to Southern California 16 years later. California remains fertile ground for new ideas and perspectives, and the Agency joined a rich literary tradition.

The Agency has represented some of the world's most talented and knowledgeable authors of non-fiction, among them distinguished journalists, scholars, executives, and self-taught experts, often over multiple works.

Before founding the Agency, Robert Shepard was Manager of Special Markets and National Accounts in the trade group at Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, responsible for millions of dollars in sales. In nearly nine years with that company, he created and managed a wide variety of marketing programs, helped develop specialized books, and worked closely with authors, booksellers and publishers abroad, as well as editing and acquiring new titles.

Robert Shepard holds bachelor's and master's degrees in English from the University of Pennsylvania, and a J.D. degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he served as Senior Technical Editor of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review. Robert is a past faculty member and lecturer at scores of writers’ conferences, including the San Francisco Writers Conference and has served as a speaker and facilitator at many other educational programs. As the web took off in the mid-1990s, he was the original host of AOL's "Ask the Agent” page.

Robert Shepard is an avid cyclist, riding thousands of miles a year, and has participated in many charity cycling events. He is also an avid birder and was a longtime volunteer with a “hawkwatch” program in the Bay Area. He is a student of French, Italian, and German and considers himself an English grammar hobbyist. A native of New Jersey, he is proud to call California home.
